There are a lot of changes you have to make after getting a divorce in Tennessee. You may have to move to a new home, change your employment, share custody of your children and make many other changes to adjust to your life after marriage. If you decided one change would also be that you would change your last name, then that brings about its own challenges.
One of the first things you will want to do is get your name changed on your driver’s license. To do this, you will need to go in person to the place where you usually get your license and registration handled, according to the Department of Safety & Homeland Security. You cannot do this online or through the mail.
You also must bring the proper documentation or they will be unable to help you. You will need your current driver’s license and the original or a certified copy of your divorce decree that shows the order to change your name. To ensure you have the right document, it must have the judge’s original signature or an official court seal. It cannot be a copy with these things on it.
Do note that some documents must go through a verification process. If this is true for your situation, it may cause a delay in getting your new license. You also will have to pay a duplicate fee, which varies depending on how many duplicates you have already gotten. This information is for education only. It is not legal advice.
